Fingal, Edinburgh - A Five-Star Floating Hotel & Lighthouse Restaurant Experience

There are evenings that feel carefully arranged — and others that unfold with effortless precision.
Recently, I took my wife aboard Fingal, berthed at Alexandra Dock in Leith, to celebrate her birthday. What began as a dinner reservation became a quietly exceptional expression of Scottish hospitality — attentive without intrusion, refined without formality, and layered with personal touches that lingered long after we stepped ashore.
This editorial combines that personal experience with the remarkable maritime story behind the vessel herself.
From Lighthouse Tender to Luxury Destination
Launched in 1963, Fingal was originally commissioned as a working vessel for the Northern Lighthouse Board — the organisation responsible for safeguarding Scotland’s coastal waters through lighthouse maintenance and navigational aids.
Built on the River Clyde during the final chapter of Scotland’s great shipbuilding era, Fingal served for nearly four decades. She transported lighthouse keepers, engineers, provisions and equipment to some of the country’s most remote coastal stations — from the Hebrides to Orkney. In harsh Atlantic conditions, she was a lifeline to isolated outposts.

Following retirement from active service in 2000, the vessel entered a new chapter. In 2014, she was acquired by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust and returned to Leith, where a multi-year restoration transformed her into Scotland’s only luxury floating hotel. Her proximity to Royal Yacht Britannia is more than symbolic — both vessels now form part of a distinctive maritime heritage experience within Edinburgh’s waterfront.
Reopened as a hotel in 2018, Fingal retains her steel hull and industrial character while presenting a contemporary interior shaped by rich textures, polished brass and subtle nautical detailing.
Five-Star Status & Culinary Recognition
Fingal holds an AA Five-Star hotel rating, placing it among the highest-graded accommodation in Scotland. The onboard Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes, recognising culinary standards, ingredient quality and technical execution.
While not Michelin-starred, the restaurant operates firmly within Edinburgh’s upper tier of refined dining — with seasonal menus that showcase Scottish produce through elegant presentation and balanced flavour.

The Evening Onboard
Arrival & Atmosphere
From booking to farewell, the service felt considered. Having mentioned in advance that we were celebrating a birthday, we arrived to find a handwritten Fingal postcard placed at our table — signed by the team with warm wishes. A subtle gesture, yet meaningful.
Seated by the window, we looked across the illuminated docks. Reflections from nearby apartments shimmered across the water, adding a gentle romance to the ship’s soft interior lighting. There is something inherently calming about dining on a vessel at night — anchored, yet alive with atmosphere.
Our pre-ordered bottle of Shiraz was presented with care. A tasting was offered before pouring, sparkling water refreshed, and the tone for the evening set: professional, measured and personable.

The Menu
The menu was thoughtfully structured — concise yet varied, balancing seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes without excess.
Starter:
Salmon — delicately presented with bright green elements and subtle acidity, elevated by crisp textures and careful seasoning.
Venison — rich yet refined, layered with contrasting sweetness and earthiness.
Main:
Duck for both of us — beautifully cooked, tender, and supported by seasonal vegetables and a composed sauce that complemented rather than dominated.
Each dish arrived with description. Timing between courses was unhurried and well judged. The dining room moved with calm coordination; every guest appeared to receive the same level of attentive care.
Dessert:
Although not habitual dessert diners, the occasion warranted indulgence.
A chocolate mousse paired with Lemongrass Sorbet.
A cinnamon creation accompanied by honey ice cream.
Portions were perfectly balanced — satisfying yet light. A gold-inscribed “Happy Birthday” chocolate detail accompanied my wife’s plate, understated yet thoughtful.
After three courses, we felt comfortably full — never weighed down. A sign of a kitchen that understands proportion as much as flavour.
The Unexpected Gesture
The defining moment came quietly.
My wife had noticed a lighthouse book onboard — something she instantly connected with. While she believed I had stepped away briefly, I arranged for a copy to be purchased and presented in a Fingal gift bag.
Having overheard our conversation about her love of lighthouses, our waiter approached the table and presented a small glass bottle lighthouse — a gift from the team.
It was unscripted. Personal. Entirely unexpected.
That moment transformed a wonderful meal into a lasting memory.
Accommodation & Events
22 Cabins & Suites
Fingal offers 22 cabins and suites, each named after Scottish lighthouses — a nod to her working heritage. Interiors combine maritime influence with modern comfort: rich textiles, bespoke detailing and, in some suites, private deck access overlooking the water.
It is boutique in scale, yet substantial in character.
Weddings & Private Events
The vessel has also established itself as one of Edinburgh’s most distinctive venues for private events and weddings.
The double-height Ballroom, framed by sweeping staircases, provides an atmospheric setting for receptions and celebrations. Exclusive use options allow couples or corporate clients to host events across the ship — incorporating dining spaces, cabins and tailored event planning.
Few venues in Scotland combine industrial maritime heritage with contemporary five-star hospitality in such an intimate setting.
Why Fingal Matters
In a city defined by castle skylines and Georgian streets, Fingal offers something different — a preserved working ship reimagined as a refined hospitality destination.
She connects Scotland’s industrial maritime past with modern service culture.
She sits alongside Britannia as part of Leith’s evolving waterfront narrative. And she delivers experiences shaped by attention to detail rather than spectacle.
For those seeking a distinctive dining experience in Edinburgh, a romantic celebration, or waterfront five-star accommodation, Fingal occupies a category of its own.
